Scrawling 5: Behind the scenes

I've always believed that you can't truly be an outstanding fashion designer or any designer of any sort, unless you were an artist to begin with. The thing is, there's a certain imaginative/visual quality artists have that people with less art in their blood don't have. The way I see it...how can you create or design something completely new or original if you cant imagine it and see it in our head first? It's not possible. The other case is that you aren't exactly all that artistic and you unconsciously make derivations from designs you've already seen and rearrange them and believe they are yours. It doesn't really work like that. This is all just build up to what I'm actually trying to get to; so many people out there seem to believe that fashion designers are shallow/image-conscious people and that that's all we care for. However, what they don't realise is that fashion is true art, art displayed on human bodies. Art comes from within; from your heart and soul, so how could it be that fashion is shallow?

I find it unfair when people make such judgements based on what they see on the media when the reality is that the media shows not a mere 1% of what actually happens in the fashion industry. The fact that people can even make judgements at all is quite unreasonable since "behind the scenes" there is absolutely no judgement. When it comes to fashion designers, no one cares what they are wearing or what they look like, whether they're fat or thin or if they walk around with piggy-tails and tutus or curly mustaches. No one judges. All the people actually want from them is the art, the fashion they come up with.

What the public think all the time is exactly this, "why is it that couture is so expensive? why would people spend so much money and clothes on shoes and bags  when there are people that can't afford food and water?". All valid, I won't disagree.
I will say two things about that though:
1."Couture" is so expensive because  it's usually a one of a kind piece which designers may take weeks to develop and produce. The custom designed and made fabrics. The garment pattern itself which is unique to each and every designer piece, makes up a huge percentage of the cost of each piece. Because it's art.

2.Everyone who has made this argument, debate me on this; what makes it any different from a Mercedes or a Lamborghini, wouldn't you buy one if you had money to spare and it was your dream car?
An Architect custom designed home (and I say this because not all your houses are architect designed, many of them  are just built by companies and contractors) they get paid so much for designing houses too, with skylights and interactive ceilings.

My point is, any product and object is designed and any design is preceded by art.

All I want is for people to take a moment and think before making a judgement. After all, YOU are the shallow one for making a judgement without actually knowing anything or even trying to know and blindly following the media and the word of mouth. Remember that.

I'll leave you with this painting to feed your thoughts..
